Three Nassau County firefighters in quarantine after transporting two COVID-19 patients

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Three firefighters are in quarantine for 14 days after transporting patients to the hospital who turned out positive for coronavirus.

Greg Foster, Nassau County’s Director of Emergency Management said the two transports happened in the last 24 hours, and the patients were confirmed to have COVID-19 after they were admitted. The county has changed protocols to respond to the threat to employees from the virus.

“Throughout this crisis we have identified changes in protocol that would insist in protecting the first responders that are responding to these calls, and we are implementing these changes as we identify them,” said Foster.

The two departments responding were Nassau County Fire and Fernandina Beach Fire. Foster said the firefighters are being monitored for any symptoms. He said firefighters and rescue crews are provided gowns, face mask and other personal protective equipment.

According to the Florida Department of Health, there are 14 people in Nassau County who have tested positive. Foster said it’s now 16 cases.
