Yulee mom creating Adopt-A-Senior to help high school seniors celebrate dispite COVID-19

Yulee, Fla. — A Yulee mom is making sure her daughter and every other senior from Yulee high school feel special during this time.

She created, a Facebook group called Adopt-A-Senior and it has really started to take off.

There’s no denying – the fact that high school seniors got a dealt a bad hand having to finish their time in high school from home, but this project is hoping to change that.

Rachel Durfee is finishing out her senior year from her couch – which is not how she was expecting to finish her time at Yulee high.

Her softball season was cut short and a lot of her ‘lasts’ were canceled too.

Durfee says, “Graduation was moved so we’re still hoping to have a graduation ceremony but our prom was canceled and grad bash we’re all the seniors go to universal that was also canceled.”

And unfortunately, her roughly 300 other classmates are in the same boat. Rachel’s mom Danielle says it’s been surreal and hard to grasp.

Danielle explains, “These last few weeks for us parents are huge. That’s the way we let them go doing the last prom, going away for the grad bash, getting ready for college.”

So to try and bring some light and love to these seniors during this time, Danielle and one of her friends started a Facebook group called Yulee High School Adopt-A-Senior.

“We really just started it up to help the seniors get through this time and give them a little piece of something, more something that the community can give back to them by just adopting them, sending a little note, a card. There’s a wish list going on, on there too.”

And it’s really started to take off. Every senior on there has already been adopted by someone on the community.

“It’s just awesome! It brings chills to me every time I get on there and start reading all the stuff,” says Danielle.

It’s a page that’s bringing families and neighbors closer. A way for seniors to feel special and communities to come together.

Rachel explains, “It’s been cool! I never would’ve thought that it would’ve taken off like this and to me when someone adopts me it makes me feel like somebody’s looking out for me.”

And they’re hoping more people join the project. They want every senior adopted, not just at Yulee High, but across the state and country.
