The Nassau County Democratic Headquarters was once decked in blue.
FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. — It's now black and charred.
Employees of TJ’s Tattoo Shop next door smelled smoke and called authorities -- and before long, the Democratic Headquarters were engulfed in flames.
The Fernandina Beach Fire Department is calling the fire accidental.
No one was hurt, but 93 year-old volunteer Helene Scott had just left to grab dinner moments before. In fact, neighboring tenants thought she was inside and had firefighters kick the door down.
“I feel terrible because my car was parked across the street and I didn't bother to tell anybody,” Scott said.
This couldn't have come at a worse time for the headquarters. It's election year, meaning all hands on deck and workers putting in long hours.
“We’ve got 60 to 80 people here making phone calls. It’s a big operation,” volunteer Walter Houle said.
The new computer monitors, mice and wireless keyboards inside are all a loss. Even worse, the Dems have to replace the contents on their own dime or get help from donors.
“We tried to get insurance several years ago and they said 'Your stuff isn't worth that much' and we weren't able to get insurance,” state committee chair Carla Voisard said.
If you want to help the Headquarters rebuild, there’s a lockbox at the main post office on Sadler Road where you can donate.
