Navy family's home ransacked, thousands of dollars in belongings stolen, burglars on the loose

FLEMING ISLAND, Fl. — A Fleming Island military family said burglars broke into their home, ransacked their child's room and even tried to steal the family dog. They even caught it all on camera.

Video, captured through the family's Ring security camera, shows a woman ring the doorbell. When no one answers, she waves to someone out of sight. Later, we see her exiting with what looks to be a television.

We spoke with the homeowner, Shynetra Lettre, who said they broke in through the back door, by ripping the screen around their porch, kicking in the door and then breaking the lock.

"That's really scary, knowing that they can see all these pictures on the wall, and see what kind of family we are and still do that." Lettre told Action News Jax, referring to the dozens of photos hanging around the home of her three girls.

"My daughters could've been here." Lettre said.

TRENDING:

Her family was not home at the time of the break-in, but her family dog, Bernard was. Lettre said she thinks they tried to take him too, because he originally was inside their house in his crate, and when they got home he was outside in the yard.

But, the thing that hits Lettre the hardest is the recorded sound of her daughter's heartbeat, that she'll never be able to hear again.

"I don't know if they stepped on it or if they just threw it on the ground if they had no regard." She explained, emotionally. "But, there's a heart inside of this bear and the light comes on because it's no longer there"

Lettre is referring to a stuffed animal that she gave her daughter. Stuffed inside it was a recording of her daughter's heartbeat, which is now broken.

"I hope that they get the maximum amount of time for the things that they did, especially the things that I cannot get back."

No one on her block had anything stolen or damaged.

This is still an active investigation.
