Some St. Johns County neighbors say the increase in traffic is making County Road 210 become unsafe.
They say people are driving entirely too fast, which makes it nearly impossible for some to get out of their driveways.
Action News Jax reporter Courtney Cole spoke to a neighbor who lives near the South Hampton neighborhood. She said people are driving so fast along the road, they’re hitting whatever is in their path, including her trash cans.
She told me she made signs that say “Let us out” because she doesn’t know what else she can do.
Kori Bichler says she enjoys living at her home in St. Johns County with her husband and three kids.
But the speedy drivers along County Road 210 make it difficult and dangerous for Bichler to leave her driveway.
"I can’t get out or I have to bolt to get out and possibly get in a wreck myself because I can’t get out one way or another,” said Bichler.
The speed limit varies on County Road 210, from 35 to 45 mph.
But she says at times it looks like drivers are going as fast as 70 mph.
"It is really scary. We don’t know what to do. What can we do?” Bichler asked.
So she's created signs that read, "Please let us out!" and placed them in front of her driveway and on her mailbox.
Bickler told Cole that not too long ago, she almost got into a crash leaving her driveway.
“Two 17-year-old girls swerved to miss me, overcorrected, sideswiped another car, airbags deployed in that car and they went off to the other side of the road,” Bichler told Action News Jax.
She said she hopes it doesn't take a tragic accident for St. Johns County to make changes to 210.
She told Action News Jax she has this message for officials in St. John's County:
“Help us figure out a solution. We don’t know what we need to do as homeowners, or what we can do to help you scoot the process along. But we need wider roads. It’s not safe.”
Cole reached out to FHP to find out how many crashes (fatal and non-fatal) have happened on this road, between Greenbriar Rd., South Hampton, until the road meets I-95.
Cole also reached out to St. Johns County to find out if they have plans to do anything to make the road safer.
