New flights to St. Augustine part of tourism boom

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Frontier Airlines is expanding its service to Northeast Florida, adding a route to St. Augustine. It's part of a tourism boom in the Nation's Oldest City.

Just off A1A in St. Johns County, the small Northeast Florida Regional Airport is getting new flights to big destinations.

Frontier Airlines said in about three months, it will offer non-stop flights to Chicago and Philadelphia.

But this isn't just good news for those living nearby wanting to take a trip. Richard Goldman, the president of the St. Johns County Visitors & Convention Bureau said this is good news for the city itself. More flights mean more people coming to visit St. Augustine.

"That demonstrates the research the airlines have done and it reinforces what we've done we discovered people are coming from further away," Goldman said.

Goldman said there's been an increase in tourism in St. Johns County for six years straight and he believes they'll continue to see a trend of people coming from further away.

"We're doing much better in terms of the number of visitors," Goldman said.

Goldman says as far as lodging goes, there has been a 21 percent increase in those staying in St. Johns County since 2010.

Local Lauren Streett calls it exciting news. She loves her city and thinks others should have the chance to explore.

"The more people, the better. It's been a really big year for the city, 450th and we're always open for tourists and were always happy to have them," Streett said.

Goldman said the Mumford and Sons concert and the 450th are what brought a lot of the new tourism into town more recently.
