New CDC order will require masks be worn while using public transportation

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A new order issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will make not wearing a mask while using public transportation a violation of federal law.

The 11-page order will require travelers to wear a mask that covers the mouth and nose to avoid the spread of the novel coronavirus. It will go into effect Feb. 1 at 11:59 p.m.

While the mandate is new, Jacksonville Transportation Authority and many other transportation hubs, such as airports, started requiring masks last year, but this new order amplifies that.

The new order mandates a mask be worn “when entering or on the premises of a transportation hub in the United States” and it has to be on when you’re waiting, riding or getting off a bus, plane, train, ship and even ride-shares such as Uber.

The CDC said a person could potentially face criminal penalties for violating the order, but says civil penalties will be more likely.

The enforcement will be handled by the Transportation Security Administration and other federal authorities.
