New traffic shift coming to State Road 16 widening project

St. Johns County Announces Traffic Shift for State Road 16 Widening Project

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — St. Johns County officials announced an upcoming traffic shift on State Road 16 near International Golf Parkway as work advances on a major road widening project.

Beginning around Oct. 1, eastbound traffic will shift onto newly constructed lanes along an approximately quarter-mile section of State Road 16 between the AutoZone driveway and 7-Eleven.

The traffic shift is part of the State Road 16 Widening Project, which is adding two travel lanes from International Golf Parkway to just beyond County Road 2209. The improvements are designed to increase traffic flow and mobility along the corridor, particularly during peak travel times near International Golf Parkway and Pacetti Road.

Construction on the widening project began July 26, 2025 and the project is currently about 70% complete.

Drivers turning right from International Golf Parkway onto State Road 16 will be required to stop before turning because westbound traffic will travel in the right lane. St. Johns County officials noted that this stop requirement will remain in place following the completion of the widening project.

Message boards and temporary traffic signs will be posted to help drivers navigate the pattern, while access to AutoZone and 7-Eleven will remain unchanged.

Once eastbound traffic is shifted onto the newly constructed lanes, contractors will begin reconstructing the two existing lanes of State Road 16. Those lanes will serve as the permanent eastbound travel lanes upon final completion.

Valerie Pacetti, project manager for St. Johns County Public Works, urged motorists to adjust to the temporary alignment carefully. “The upcoming traffic shift marks an important step forward for the SR 16 Widening Project,” Pacetti said. “We encourage drivers to pay close attention to the temporary signage and use caution as they become familiar with the new traffic pattern.”

Full completion of the State Road 16 Widening Project is anticipated in early spring 2027. For more information, visit the county’s website.
