Officials told Eyewitness News one person is confirmed dead after a small plane crashed on New Smyrna Beach Tuesday night.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — Officials told Eyewitness News one person is confirmed dead after a small plane crashed on New Smyrna Beach Tuesday night.

The plane crashed just off the beach near Flagler Avenue around 9 p.m., officials said.

According to the New Smyrna Beach Fire Department, one person was killed in the crash. The victim hasn't been identified.

It's unclear what caused the crash, although heavy fog was reported in the area. The Federal Aviation Administration has been called in to investigate.
