JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Division of Emergency Management has issued a scam alert following Hurricane Isaias, warning state residents recovering from the storm to be vigilant against potential fraud.
Officials advised the public to watch for attempts to gather sensitive personal information or money.
Emergency officials cautioned that fraudulent schemes often increase after natural disasters, with bad actors seeking to exploit individuals attempting to rebuild. In response, the state released an example screenshot of a scam text message to help residents recognize fraud.
State officials emphasized that residents should verify the identity of anyone offering disaster assistance in person.
FDEM urged the public to demand proof of employment from representatives. “Beware of in-person scams! Always ask for official identification from anyone claiming to be a government employee or disaster assistance representative,” the agency stated.
Property owners seeking repair services are advised to check credentials before entering into agreements. The state recommended checking contractor licenses through myfloridalicense.com prior to hiring workers.
Officials noted that homeowners may have consumer protections if they sign an agreement hastily. “You might be able to cancel contracts within a few days of signing,” FDEM stated. “If something seems suspicious, verify their credentials before you act!”
The warning also extends to remote contact, with officials cautioning that “scammers may try to take advantage of impacted Floridians” through unsolicited phone calls, text messages and digital offers.
To report suspicious activity, residents can call the state hotline at 1-866-9NO-SCAM. Reports of unlicensed contractor activity can be submitted by calling 866-532-1440.
