Pay-to-park stations to go in effect soon in Jacksonville Beach

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. — Get ready for changes when you head to Jacksonville Beach, if you plan on parking a car.

Beachgoers will have to enter their license plate numbers and credit card information at pay stations in order to park beginning Friday.

The first two hours are $3 and $1 for an additional hour and $7 max for the entire day.

Sgt. Larry Smith with the Jacksonville Beach Police Department says paid parking at Jax Beach was started about eight years ago using a parking attendant and they only took cash.

Now, Smith says the new pay stations will be more convenient and beachgoers shouldn’t worry about entering in their credit card information.

“These machines are monitored all day long, when paid parking is in effect on Friday, Saturdays and Sundays,” Sgt. Smith said.

Smith said the money generated from the parking stations will help pay for extra security at Jacksonville Beach.

“We’ll have two community service officers  that monitor the lot constantly and we also have police officer that’s assigned to the lot and monitors the lot throughout the entire hours of operation,” said.

Those who live in Jacksonville Beach do not have to pay for parking as long as they register on the city's website.

There will also be a Park Mobile app that will be launched in two weeks where people can add time to their parking spot using their phone.

“I don’t know about the older generation though paying the machines and using the app, so there might be some training involved,” said visitor Paula Howell.

Police say if you park and don’t pay, you could be looking at paying a $42 ticket.

The following lots will have pay to park stations:

  • Latham Plaza lot
  • Pier parking lot
  • Parking east of the Ritz on 422 1st Street North
  • Cape lot (CRA Lot) 450 2nd Street
