Southern pine beetles are causing problems for property owners in Northeast Florida.
“What they do is they bore into the tree and tunnel right behind the bark and introduce a fungus into the tree,” said Florida Forest Service forester Dave Holley.
The Florida Forest Service says this year its agents have seen more activity with the beetles than they normally do.
They cause discoloration at the top of the pine trees and that’s what alerts foresters that the beetles are attacking them.
And they can spread quickly.
“After they get done with this tree, they’re going to hatch out and look for another tree,” said Holley.
We went along with the Florida Forest Service to a 12-acre site where trees had to be cut down to stop the beetles’ spread.
