Police: Burglary suspect armed with knife critically hurt after being shot by Jacksonville officer

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man who police say had a knife in his hand is in critical condition after being shot by a Jacksonville police officer Wednesday morning in the Panama Park area.

Chief T.K. Waters of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said they received a report about a suspicious person in the 8000 block of Hawthorne Street around 7:30 a.m.

When officers arrived, they realized the man standing in a yard of the neighborhood was a suspect in a burglary that happened on Halloween in the same area.

He was standing in the yard with his hand in his pockets, according to JSO.

Police said they told him to show his hands, but he started to run.

While running, police said the man removed his hands from his pockets but it was unclear what was in his hands.

Waters said an officer used his electrical weapon on the man to "gain control of the situation and the suspect," causing the man to fall to the ground.

Police said the man then turned toward the officer on the ground with a knife in his hand.

Police said an officer fired three shots at the man.

The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

JSO did not release the man's name, but said he has a criminal history of several burglaries and has a drug conviction.

Loved ones told Action News Jax the man shot is Timothy Lagonia.

“I was in my house eating a bowl of cereal and I heard four gunshots," said Kasey Brown, Lagonia's ex-girlfriend.

When Brown ran outside of her Hawthorne street home this morning, she saw something she hadn't expected.

Her ex-boyfriend and father of her children, Lagonia, lying on the ground.

“I just told him daddy’s in the hospital and we’re going to have to figure out some things--and I’ll eventually have to tell him," Brown told Action News Jax.

His ex-girlfriend says he wouldn't jeopardize the ability to see his three kids.

“He was down there, he wanted to see his kids for one last time--because I guess he was going to turn himself in," said Brown.

According to Florida Department of Corrections records, Lagonia was sentenced to 18 months in prison for burglary in 2010 and was sentenced to another 18 months in prison for burglary in 2012.

In 2015, he was sentenced to two years in prison for burglary.

Records show also show he was incarcerated from Aug. 1, 2018, to Sept. 16, 2018.

The officer who shot him has been on the force for 11 years.

This is his first officer-involved shooting.
