Police: Waffle House murder still has no leads

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A family is still mourning the loss of a man who was gunned down at a local Waffle House five years ago.

For the first time the family is speaking out, searching for answers.

The Batts family says they are still heartbroken after their loved one was taken away too soon.

It's what brought them back to the Jacksonville Beach Police Department after five years to ask for help.

"It doesn't seem that long ago but it's five years and we're not any closer to the truth," said Milton Batts, Roderick Batts' father.

Roderick Batts' family describes the last five years as painful, following his murder in a Waffle House parking lot. Now they say they just want one thing:

They want someone to be held accountable

The Batts family drove nearly 600 miles from their hometown in North Carolina to hold a press conference to ask for answers in Roderick Batts' murder.

He was shot twice -- once in the lower back and once in his head.

Police still haven't been able to find his killers.

Witnesses say Roderick Batts was on the phone outside Waffle House when two suspects walked up to him and shot him before fleeing the area.

Roderick Batts left behind four children -- two boys and two girls.

"It gets really hard sometimes because he was a great father, so it gets really hard," said his fiancée, Shavone Levey.

Despite the fact the family hasn't received any new information in the case, they refuse to allow it to become cold.

"I do believe without a doubt that this case will be solved," said his mother, Melva Batts.

The family has raised nearly $4,000 for a reward.

In addition to the family's reward, Crime Stoppers is offering $5,000 for any information on this case.
