ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — Human error is being blamed for an E. coli scare in St. Johns County, officials said.
A boil water notice was reported in the county on May 6, and it lasted through the weekend after a water well tested positive for the bacteria.
The false alarm could lead to changes in the way county water is tested. System-wide boil water alerts are rare, which is why environmental experts may change procedures.
The St. Augustine Record reports that the error most likely came from human processing, either in collection or at the lab, meaning there was never any e. coli in the water.
Experts said that would have been eliminated in the water treatment process in the distribution system. But, it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to public health.
Some people are outraged and calling for an apology, wondering if anyone will be held accountable for this public scare.
