JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A new report suggests no major structural changes need to be made to the Buckman bridge despite six deaths in the last five years.
The new report largely blames drivers -- and not the construction of the bridge for those deadly accidents. The study suggests cracking down on speeders and building an active traffic management system by putting up more signs to warn drivers of slowdowns.
"Say for instance you got one lane that traffic is slowing down, congested… if you let folks know in advance, 'Hey you've got lanes slowing down,' then they can start slowing down," said Ron Tittle with FDOT.
FDOT says the system could take five years to put in place. But it says FHP will begin ramping up speed enforcement soon.
