Restaurant Report visits Tunis Wings and Subs, Rosina Pizza and Florida House Inn

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Flying insects in the kitchen and food not kept at the proper temperature. In this week's Restaurant Report, learn what an owner blames for the violations health inspectors found in his restaurant.

Your health and safety are why state health inspectors make surprise visits at our local restaurants.

They're also why Action News does the Restaurant Report every week. Romney Smith checked the state inspection reports to give you the facts. Page by page, Smith went through all the reports from this past week to make sure the places you're taking your family to eat are safe and clean.

This week, Tunis Wings and Subs topped the list of high priority violations. We spoke with the owner and here's what we found in the inspection: 28 violations, seven high priority, including live flying insects in the food prep area and cold food refrigerated above 41 degrees.

Smith: "Can we take a look?"

Owner Amor Hamza: "Absolutely."

Smith: "All right let's go."

Hamza said the day the inspector came, they had an air conditioning issue, affecting refrigeration temperatures.

"Since we have to fix the AC leak, for some reason they had to turn the power off. When she walked in, of course the temperature is going to be a little high. And right now it's complied. It's actually OK," Hamza said.

We saw one fly on a counter. Hamza showed us the order for fly lights to go next to windows.

"I didn't know about it until he told me. I thought it was impossible for me to get rid of them," Hamza said. During a follow-up inspection a week later, Tunis passed all areas of the inspection.

Other restaurants near the top of the list include Rosina Pizza. It received 20 warnings, including one for curdled heavy cream. And at Florida House Inn in Fernandina, health inspectors found flies in the kitchen and bar areas.
