“One week is like this and the next week it goes up,” Ellis said. “Trying to cut back as much as I can, you know or whatever I can. It is expensive.”

Bread is up 14%, or about $.50 more. Lunch meat is up 17%, about $.50 more, bacon is up 8% and milk is up 15%, about roughly $.40 more.

As a result, Ellis buys more store-brand groceries rather than name brands.

Inflation frustration is also built in among locally-owned supermarkets like El Primo Restaurant and Grocery off Beach Boulevard in Jacksonville.

Anelys Prado said profits are taking a hit because inventory costs more.

“We have to increase the price of sale of our products, at the restaurant/bars and at times can’t fully pay our employees,” Prado said. “The workers feel frustrated. The boss feels frustrated.”

Workers hope local leaders will hear out their concerns

“We have to be prosperous, if we don’t get any help from the top, we won’t see the results,” Prado said.
