SJCSO: St. Augustine house fire was started by arsonist

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — Charred cabinets with clothes still inside now sit beside a mobile home on Colee Street.

The inside of the home is completely gutted.

A sign outside warns against trespassing after a massive fire not only destroyed the home but shook this small neighborhood.

“We are moving. I will not be here. I will not take the chance of my home getting caught on fire. I have a 3-year-old and newborn on the way,” said Amy Wonsey, a neighbor.

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office says someone set the fire. You can see where it may have started by looking at a burned tree right next to a window.

The fire happened just before 4:30 a.m. Saturday. A neighbor ran inside to save a mom and two children.

“If he wouldn't have gotten to them, they would've been gone,” said Jamie Martindale, a neighbor.

This family now doesn’t have a home to come back to because everything they owned is destroyed.

“I took them over some clothes and helped them out the best I could,” Wonsey said.

While everyone made it out alive, neighbors are worried it could happen again.

Investigators say they need the public’s help in finding whoever is responsible.

If you have any information, you’re asked to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
