St. Johns County Fire Rescue announces death of engineer

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — St. Johns County Fire Rescue has lost one of its own.

A spokesperson confirmed the death of Engineer Garrett A. Opper, who died unexpectedly at his Jacksonville Beach home Wednesday.

According to SJCFR, Opper joined the department in Dec. 2016. was promoted to Engineer in Oct. 2021, and assigned to station 1.

“St. Johns County Fire Rescue is deeply saddened and has extended the Department’s heartfelt condolences to his family,” it said in an official statement. SJCFR changed its profile picture on social media in honor of the fallen first responder.

SJCFR said it will release funeral information when it becomes available.
