St. Johns County neighbors concerned about safety, quality of life regarding RV campground proposal

A new RV campground and resort could  be coming to St. Johns County, right off of I-95 and SR-207.

The owner of the St. Johns RV Park, which is also located on SR-207, filed a proposal with the county for new ways to use his property.

Action News Jax reporter Courtney Cole spoke to some neighbors who live in his current RV park, who are concerned that his new idea could affect their safety and quality of life.

Debi Phillips has had a home at the St. Johns RV Park for the last two years.

And in that short amount of time, she says she's seen a lot of change.

“The parking area there, they made a big expansion over here, too. I think they're talking about restaurants now,” Phillips told Cole.

John Alexon, the owner of the St. Johns RV Park, would like to continue transforming the area.

He filed a proposal with St. Johns County for a new RV park and resort.

Alexon is proposing 130 acres of the land, located on the Northeast side of SR 207—and east of I-95—be used for the RV park.

"It's a concern. For us, it's a concern,” Phillips said.

The property off I-95 and 207 already includes a flea market and farmers market, in addition to an outdoor storage at the RV Park. If it expands, neighbors worry traffic, which they say is already bad, could get even worse.

"Bringing in a whole bunch of RVs, it's going to be constant. They need a light. They need something. And they need another way in and another way out,” said Phillips.

The developer still needs to get, a special permit from the county.

That is set to be discussed at the planning and zoning meeting Thursday.

Cole reached out to Alexon for comment about his plans, but she is still waiting to hear back.
