St. Augustine garbage truck driver finds lost toddler

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — A toddler is safe and with family after wandering out their backdoor Thursday morning, thanks to the help of a vigilant garbage truck driver.

Denise Delancy, of Waste Management, was servicing her residential route in St. Augustine when she noticed the child alone near the intersection of Madeore and Aiken streets.

“I pulled up to the residence, got the cans, and noticed there was a toddler sitting there in between the cans,” Delancy said.

Delancy immediately sprang into action. She called 911 and knocked on the door of a nearby home.

“My first instinct was to get the baby safe and away from the road. She was out there alone,” Delancy said.

The parents were reunited with their child before law enforcement arrived.

Officials with Waste Management said the parents were asleep inside the home and did not know the child had left the home.

Delancy says she was just doing her job and was at the right place at the right time.
