St. Johns marine crew rescues boat in distress

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — The St Johns County Fire & Rescue responded to a reported vessel in distress near the St. Augustine Inlet around 5 p.m. Sunday.

A 16-foot vessel with two people lost power, was taking on water and being pulled out to sea on an outgoing tide, according to initial reports.

Conditions at the time included 10-12 knot NE winds, 2-4 foot seas and water temperature of 58 degrees.

A Marine Rescue crew responded to the distress call and found that the vessel was being battered by heavy surf. They secured the anchor and took one person to be medically evaluated.

One rescuer stayed with the vessel and helped tow it to a SJCFR watercraft.

The boat was docked safely in a commercial post and no additional injuries were reported.
