St. Johns woman says she heard footsteps on roof as suspect tried to break-in

St. Johns County, FL. — Soraya Pena-Bogart tells Action News Jax she and her husband were jolted awake by sounds of footsteps on their roof early Monday morning around 2 a.m.

Now the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an attempted burglary at their Trailmark Drive home in St. Augustine.

“I did not know what to do, I just freaked out. Honestly, I ran up the stairs in PJ’s. I didn’t even bring anything with me. I didn’t know what to expect. I just wanted to make sure my kids were good,” said Pena-Bogart.

After hearing the footsteps, Pena-Bogart says her husband looked out the window and saw what appeared to be a young teen standing near a bike in their backyard.

“My husband looked out, he did identify the kid, he saw the kid looking right at him. And then he was yelling at him, and he told me, ‘Call the cops!’ And as soon as he heard that, the kid jumped on a bike and he left,” said Pena-Bogart.

She says the teen they spotted in the backyard was wearing grey sweatpants and a grey hoodie.

“He came to the closer window and we saw that there was a bike parked at the end of the lawn, and then the kid was standing more to the corner, kind of like, watching up, to probably help out the other person that was up there,” said Pena-Bogart.

She then says they heard more footsteps on the roof, but didn’t see anyone on the house, so they assume the second suspect jumped off the roof.

When the sun came up that morning, the family spotted a utility box cover on the ground and noticed the screen on their second floor had been cut.

Pena-Bogart says their home surveillance captured video of the teen she believes served as a lookout, while another person attempted to break-in through the second-floor window.
