Students left with questions after Heritage Institute closes

Students standing outside, waiting for answers as to why their college immediately shut down.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Heritage Institute in Jacksonville shut down, leaving hundreds of students with questions.

Many of the students told Action News Jax that they spent years studying in the classrooms, taking out student loans and have been left with no degree to validate their work.

A piece of paper was taped to the main entrance that said, “Heritage does not have enough cash to continue to run its business."

Many people learned about the school’s closing over social media.

“It’s very shocking news and it’s very disappointing,” said student Mariah Jena. “It’s just unbelievable that they would do this to the students with no notice.”

Students said the college left behind a list of schools that they can apply to that have similar fields of study as what Heritage Institute offered.

Students told Action News Jax that as of noon Wednesday, that no one, including school leaders, have contacted them about what happens next.

“We came in here not even knowing each other, and now, we’re one big family now. And now, it’s like we’re being ripped away from each other,” said student Kirstine Hertzog. “And we have no idea what we’re supposed to do.”
