A 60-year-old injured her boyfriend by throwing a piece of furniture at him during an argument about who would win the Super Bowl, the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said.

Cheryl Merrill was arrested after the incident, which happened at 7 p.m. Sunday, just after kickoff, a police report said. Merrill became enraged during the argument and threw a wooden shelf at her boyfriend of five years, deputies said.

The boyfriend had a swollen hand but refused medical treatment. Because of his hand injury, he was unable to sign an affidavit.

Merrill was described by deputies as "extremely intoxicated" and disobeyed orders to remain in the cul-de-sac while deputies investigated the incident, the report said.

Merrill got into her car and started the engine, deputies said, and was forcibly removed from the car in order so that she couldn't drive away, the report said.

She is charged with aggravated battery and is in the St. Johns County Jail on $6,000 bond.
