Teen accidentally shot by mother in Jacksonville neighborhood is recovering

A 14-year-old girl is recovering at the hospital after police said she was accidentally shot by her mother in the Jacksonville Heights neighborhood.

The Florida Department of Children and Families is investigating where the case of a mother who told police she was cleaning her gun when it went off in her Jacksonville Heights home Sunday evening.

Before you even get to the home, you could tell something terrible happened.

You could see droplets of blood along the sidewalk, leading to the door mat with the message, “Never mind the dog, beware of owner.” And there’s someone holding a revolver.

Neighbors like Georjan Hutchinson told Action News Jax the teen was across the street at a birthday party playing with friends all day.

Another neighbor said, after the teen went home for the night, just a few minutes later, she was shot.

“I said a prayer before I went to bed last night,” said Hutchinson.

A close friend of the family said the girl's condition has improved Monday night, and she is going to be OK.

“Thank God, she still alive. I’m going to continue to pray that she make it,” said Hutchinson.
