Thieves target Jacksonville's Brierwood neighborhood

Dozens of vehicles have been broken into so far this year in the Brierwood area.

Neighbors said five cars were stolen just this week.

Action News Jax obtained surveillance video that captured the moments before brazen thieves took off with a man’s vehicle.

Surveillance cameras were pointed right at them.

"I caught two guys trying to break into my car and my husband’s car," neighbor Laura Bondoc said.

Bondoc said she watched two men walk up to her two cars with flashlights.

"They were lifting on the handles and just walking around, looking," Bondoc said.

The next morning, Bondoc said her neighbor’s vehicle was gone.

Action News Jax saw the incident report from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

In it, the victim tells officers that she woke up and her vehicle was missing.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, there were no signs of forced entry.

"It's been happening here quite a bit over the last few years, but it just seems like it's getting worse," Bondoc said.

Action News Jax looked at the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office’s crime map and found that there have been 38 vehicle thefts within two miles from the street so far since the beginning of this year, and 125 vehicles have been broken into.

A couple neighborhoods over,  a woman said her neighbor’s truck was stolen this week, too.

Bondoc said she will do anything to get these thieves behind bars before this happens again.

"If they could do that, what else could they be doing," Bondoc said.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, the car taken from the Brierwood neighborhood was found on Cook Street, which is 15 miles away.
