Christmas Eve crash kills 12-year-old, injures 7

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The driver of an SUV is seriously injured and a 12-year-old is dead after a crash late Wednesday night.

The Florida Highway Patrol said a white SUV, black Honda Civic and silver Honda CRV were involved in a crash around 11:50 p.m. on Southside Boulevard near Deerwood Park.

FHP said the white GMC Yukon with the family in it was riding next to the Civic when it veered into the Civic’s lane, clipped it, over corrected and hit the CRV head-on. The Yukon then flipped landing on its top.

There were six people in the Yukon at the time of the crash, said FHP. The driver, 48-year-old Kent New, was taken to UF Health Jacksonville for treatment of serious injuries and 12-year-old Natalie New, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the hospital.

The four other passengers who were in the Yukon received minor injuries: 69-year-old Roberta New, 48-year-old Jennifer New, and two children ages 12 and 8.

Action News learned from a source that Kent New worked at St. Vincent's Hospital.

Moody Chisholm, CEO of St. Vincent's HealthCare, gave a statement about the New family, "We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the New family."

FHP said charges are pending at this time.
