JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Two tornadoes were confirmed to have touchdown in Southeast Georgia on Wednesday, Jan. 5.

Wednesday’s storms were part of a large storm system that moved from the Rockies to the east coast beginning on Sunday, Jan. 1.
On the warm side of the storm, there were severe storms with damaging winds and tornadoes from Texas to Georgia.
The font reached Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia Wednesday afternoon. Warm, humid air ahead of the front clashed with the cold, dry air moving in from the west creating an environment favorable for severe storms and isolated tornadoes.

At least two tornadoes have been confirmed – an EF-1 with winds between 86 and 110 mph in Bristol, Ga., Pierce Co. – about 100 miles north/northwest of Jacksonville. Another tornado, an EF-0, was confirmed in Charlton County, Ga. about 55 miles north-northwest of Jacksonville. Winds were estimated near 80 mph.
Action News Jax reported in Pierce County when storms and strong winds destroyed one family’s home.
Across Northeast Florida, the storms produced winds gusts up to 65 mph plus some small hail.

The front did bring some much-needed rainfall with amounts averaging a third of an inch and up to just over an inch. It was the greatest one-day rainfall since tropical storm Nicole, nearly two months ago on Nov. 10.
