Tuberculosis testing at Raines High

DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. — A Raines High School student was diagnosed with tuberculosis last week and now school officials are racing to test the rest of the students before winter break.

The student infected didn't know they had tuberculosis because a local doctor misdiagnosed the student.

Students at Raines High School should be in crunch time studying for their finals, but it's another type of testing that has Destiny Pace concerned Wednesday.

"It's been kind of stressful, you know with the fact that TB is going around," said Pace. "I don't want nobody coughing on me."

A letter was sent home to parents on Tuesday stating a student had been diagnosed with Tuberculosis.

The identity of the student is not being released.

It has been reported that the student has been sick for several months and has missed a significant amount of school because of it. That student was originally misdiagnosed with bacterial pneumonia, which has similar symptoms.

Destiny Paces' father, Calvin Honors said he thinks the school is doing all they can do.

"No ma'am, I think as long as the school is taking precautionary measures I think that is all that counts."

Honors said no matter what sickness is going around the school, he'll make sure his little girl is studying for finals.

"All they have to do is focus on their lesson and concentrate on what the school is doing," said Honors. "The school is taking precautionary measures and trying to figure out how to get rid of it. They need to go and study their lesson that's not an excuse not to study their lesson."

Tuberculosis testing will be from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Raines High School on Wednesday.

If your child does not get tested at that time, the Health Department will be available during winter break and also offer in-home blood draws.
