The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Deputies said those two people were trying to go ahead of the train before they were hit. SJC deputies said two women who had just walked past Avenue A were trying to cross the train tracks while a train was in motion in their direction.

A witness told police they saw one of the women fall on the rocks inside the train tracks and the other woman tried to help her.

They both failed to get off the tracks in time and that’s when they both were struck by that train. This tragic incident caused St. John’s County Commander Chuck Mulligan to remind people how dangerous it is to walk across the train tracks.

“We need to inform people not to get on the railroad tracks. We’ve seen tragedies throughout the years. It is private property. People are not supposed to be walking on or across these particular areas,” Mulligan said.

Deputies are now  working to identify the two women who were killed.
