JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A local woman identified only as Diane received a check on Thursday for more than $13,000 – money that was hers, even though she didn’t know about it.
“My mom recently passed away, and it was funds she apparently forgot about,” Diane said.
The Florida Department of Financial Services says there are thousands of people like Diane who could have money waiting for them.
More than $68 million in property is waiting to be claimed in Duval County, with another $10 million in St. Johns County and more than $9 million in Clay County.
“When the bank has a safety deposit box and loses track of the owner, they drill it and after a period of time they send it to the state,” said Rick Sweet, assistant director for the Division of Accounting and Auditing.

It’s then put on a website where people can look up their names to claim it, as Diane did.
If it’s not claimed, the items will go to an auction. The auction will be held in Jacksonville this year.
A public auction preview day will be held Friday at the Jacksonville Marriott on Salisbury Rd, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to showcase the unclaimed items.
Those items will go up for auction on Saturday at the Mariott at 10 a.m. Registration for the auction begins at 8 a.m.
