JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Democrat State Representative and Jacksonville native Angie Nixon is making national headlines again with her recent U.S. Senate primary win. She will face incumbent Republican Senator Ashley Moody in November
A big part of the conversation, Nixon’s ties to the Democratic Socialists of America organization. Some opponents are calling Nixon extreme.
During an interview on The Faulkner Focus on FOX News, Senator Moody said, “This is not someone who just debates which policies will lead to safety and prosperity for our people, this is someone who is a master of chaos and that’s in line with these radicals, right?”
When asked about being called a socialist, Nixon told Action News Jax, “I am a member of the Democratic Party and we are a very big team. I’m a business owner, so I am not a socialist. I am a part of DSA. I’m a part of the Working Families Party. I’m a Democrat. I’ve been a lifelong Democrat, right? And so, all are welcome. All are welcome, especially if they are trying to ensure that we have our most basic rights and needs met. Which are everyone having access to quality healthcare, everyone having access to quality housing, everyone having access to fully funded public schools. Those are the most basic tenants within all these organizations that I’m a member of, but that is not what the Republicans want.”
One of the people distancing themselves from the Socialist label is from Nixon’s own party, Florida gubernatorial candidate David Jolly.
Nixon was asked if she planned to talk to Jolly about being aligned in their messaging. Nixon said, “I am talking to everyone. Yes, I actually had a conversation with him. And we’re gonna work together for the betterment of our state and our country. Again, I am someone who believes in a Florida for all and an America for all. And I’m not worried about labels. I’m worried about people’s needs. And I know that Mr. Jolly is worried about people’s needs, and I look forward to being on a ticket with him to actually make that happen.”
Nixon defeated her primary challenger, retired Lt. Col. Alex Vindman, despite raising $15 million less. Nixon was asked how she now plans to compete against Moody and national GOP dollars going into November.
Nixon said, “I am not accepting money from corporate PACs or anyone like that. I am only going to be accepting money from just regular hardworking everyday people because this is not my campaign. This is the people’s campaign.”
Nixon is hosting a virtual “How We Win” emergency call tonight at 7pm. This is a virtual organizing event and they plan to discuss everything from fundraising and voter outreach to combatting disinformation.
