23-year-old arrested for murder in fatal shooting of uncle at Soutel Drive laundromat

23-year-old La’Darius Purdy

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man was arrested for Murder after allegedly shooting his uncle at a laundromat on Soutel Drive in February, where he died from his injuries, says the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

According to JSO, on February 23, District 6 Patrol officers responded to the laundromat after receiving reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found 61-year-old Roderick Crawford with several gunshot wounds. He died before receiving medical treatment.

JSO’s Homicide Unit began its investigation by reviewing security camera footage and interviewing witnesses. The security footage showed Crawford loading clothing into a dryer when a man wearing a mask shot him in the back of his head.

Detectives were able to identify 23-year-old La’Darius Purdy, Crawford’s nephew, as the gunman.

JSO says Purdy was arrested on Wednesday for an active warrant he had for a previous charge, Domestic Battery, following an incident in January. On Thursday, while in jail, Purdy was brought in by the Homicide Unit for an interview about his uncle’s murder. After the interview, Purdy was arrested for Murder and Tampering with Evidence.

Purdy is still behind bars at the Duval County jail awaiting a court appearance.
