A Waycross church is picking up the pieces after it was damaged by tornado

WAYCROSS, Ga. — A church in Waycross is picking up the pieces after an EF 1 tornado touched down during their service Wednesday night.

Churchgoers at Kettle Creek Church were in the middle of their weekly 7 o’clock service when the tornado hit.

The church suffered major damage to its roof along with severe flooding inside the building, but luckily Pastor Danny Callahan tells Action News Jax, the 70 people inside were safe.

He says, “We are so blessed and so grateful. God had put people in place but we had about 70 people here and nobody was hurt not a person whatsoever.”

Callahan was in the middle of his sermon when it happened.

“It just sort of shook everything and blew everything off it was there.”

The aftermath – downed trees, damaged gravesites, and half of it’s roof gone.

Callahan says, “I heard it going across the building and I didn’t know what to think I’ve never been in a tornado”

We’re told the church THEY had just redone the church back last year.

“it’s just been since April that we’ve been in this building and as you can see now we got to start over and we will start over God will provide everything that we need”

Crews were out at the site all day Wednesday cleaning up and working to repair some of the damage.

Callahan says he’s overwhelmed by the support.

“How much more love can you have in the community we’re not a big community but this community is full of love and full of God and I thank the Lord that I’m a part of it.”
