JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A very heated argument broke out in the parking lot of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office downtown on Friday afternoon following the first appearance of two women who police say abducted a 2-year-old girl.
The girl’s aunt, Jasmine Elmore, argued with relatives of the defendants, 22-year-old Rachael Wynn and her 25-year-old cousin Kiera Wynn. Elmore claimed her niece, 2-year-old Wynter Floyd, could have been harmed after she was left alone on the side of the road.
Both women were inside the courtroom along with Wynter’s father, Calvin Elmore, who was facing unrelated charges involving counterfeit money.
Calvin Elmore spoke up during the defendant’s first appearance to help add more context to what happened. The judge eventually found probable cause and set very high bonds for both women.
Police said on Thursday that Rachael Wynn allegedly took Wynter from her family's home on East Leonard Circle in the Northwest side near Moncrief Road. Rachael Wynn said she would give the girl back if the girl's family would loan the vehicle.
Rachael Wynn allegedly loaned a 2007 Chevy Impala to the little girl's father and was planning on holding the girl hostage until she got the vehicle back, police said.
The vehicle was returned to Rachael Wynn after it was dropped off at Lem Turner Road and Grand Street, but she didn't follow through with returning the little girl, police said. However, the girl's mother said Wynter was dropped off on the side of a road. A driver passing by in the 3600 block of Owens Avenue near Moncrief Road, stopped and called for help when they saw that the girl was alone.
Wynter’s whereabouts were unknown for a couple of hours an Amber Alert was never issued.
Keira Wynn told the judge on Friday she had nothing to with the kidnapping; she said her cousin Rachael showed up at her house with the child, but the state claims they were together when the child was dropped off.
There was tension between both families before the hearing even began. That tension escalated once the hearing ended.
“If that was their child, bro, they would want justice for their child how can you be a human being to even leave a child on the side of the road for dead,” said Jasmine Elmore.
Jasmine Elmore said her niece had to have surgery when she was a newborn and said the women did not take care of her or even fed her. At least one of the defendants, Rachael Wynn, is due back in court on August 25.
