Rex Morgan, former hoops star at JU, dies at 67

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Rex Morgan, a Jacksonville University guard who helped the Dolphins reach the 1970 Final Four, died Friday after a long battle with throat cancer.

He was 67.

Morgan was part of the Dolphins team with future NBA Hall of Famer Artis Gilmore. Morgan himself was drafted by the Boston Celtics and would go on to play in the NBA for two seasons.

"Rex was always a fighter,” Gilmore said. “That’s no different from the time he was a very competitive athlete back in the 70s when we had an opportunity to compete for a national championship. He was a great teammate and leader.”

After his playing career ended, Morgan was head coach at Arlington Country Day for many years. His teams won seven state championships while producing numerous Division I student-athletes. His record at ACD was 477-83, according to The Florida Times-Union.
