Road rage leads to teen being attacked, dragged down busy road, police say

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga — A teen in Gwinnett County, Georgia, is walking us through the terrifying moments when he says a fit of road rage led to him being dragged down the road while hanging out of a car. The whole thing was caught on dashcam video.

The situation unfolded along busy Highway 316 during rush hour.

The 18-year-old victim, who asked only to be identified as Dalton, said he's thankful every day that he's still alive.

"I honestly don't know what set it off," Dalton told WSB-TV. "He gets out of his car, punches me in the face. I kick him in the face with my boot out the window."

Police identified the other driver as Emmitt Grubbs.

Dalton said during the fight, he hit Grubbs with a baseball bat. Grubbs grabbed Dalton’s keys and went back to his car. That’s when Dalton followed and got the ride of his life.

“When he started dragging me, I was holding onto the car because I knew as soon as he let go, I would just fall right off."

Dalton said Grubbs was yelling, “I’m going to kill you” as he had him in a headlock at 40 mph.

“He let go, and he took his hand and he shoved me out of the car,” Dalton said.

WSB-TV looked into Grubbs' past. Records show he was charged in 2016 with simple battery after another road rage incident. The victim in that incident told police Grubbs stopped in the road, hit him in the face and left.

Court records show Grubbs was sentenced to 12 months’ probation.

Dalton realizes his case could have gone south very quickly.

"Anything you would do differently?" WSB-TV asked Dalton.

“Not get out of the truck, just call 911. But being in that moment and the adrenaline going, and he had my property, that's the only thing I thought about getting back,” Dalton said.

WSB-TV was not able to reach Grubbs for comment on this story. He bonded out of jail Wednesday night on several charges.
