Rookie Louisiana police officer fatally shot

Members of the Shreveport Police Department are in mourning after a rookie officer was killed Wednesday night.

SHREVEPORT, La. — A rookie Louisiana police officer was fatally shot Wednesday night outside a home in Shreveport as she prepared for her shift, the Times-Picayune reported.

Chatéri Alyse Payne, 22, had graduated from a police academy on Nov. 16 and was working with the Shreveport Police Department. Wednesday around 8:30 p.m., she was shot several times and died at a local hospital, the Shreveport Times reported. Payne was wearing her uniform when she was shot, the newspaper reported.

Cpl. Marcus Hines said one person was detained for questioning but has not been charged, the Times-Picayune reported.

"This is a tragic loss not only for the Shreveport community, but for all of us who rely on police officers to keep us safe," Gov. John Bel Edwards wrote on his official Facebook account. "May we all pause and take a moment to pray for this officer, her family and friends and the entire Shreveport Police Department."

Payne was a track star and dance line member at Captain Shreve High School in Shreveport, where she graduated in 2014, the Times reported

Payne was hired by the Shreveport Police Department hired Payne in July 2018, and she graduated from the police academy two months ago, the newspaper reported.
