Actor Hal Holbrook dead at age 95, report says

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Actor Hal Holbrook, best known for his longtime stage portrayal of author Mark Twain, has died at age 95, The New York Times reported early Tuesday.

According to the newspaper, Holbrook’s assistant, Joyce Cohen, confirmed late Monday that the Emmy and Tony winner died Jan. 23 at his California home. The report did not specify a cause of death.

At age 29, Holbrook began playing Twain in a one-man stage show called “Mark Twain Tonight!” He continued the portrayal, which earned him a Tony Award in 1966, off and on until 2017, the Times reported.

Holbrook also made his mark on the big screen, receiving an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor in the 2007 film “Into the Wild” and logging notable performances in “All the President’s Men” (1976) and “Lincoln” (2012), according to the Times. He also won five Emmy Awards for his television performances in the 1974 miniseries “Lincoln,” “The Bold Ones: The Senator” (1970), “Pueblo” (1973) and the “Alaska” episode of “Portrait of America” (1989), the newspaper reported.

Holbrook is survived by two daughters, a son, two stepdaughters, two grandchildren and two step-grandchildren, according to the Times.
