A Colorado woman died Thursday after apparently falling into rapids during a boating trip at Grand Canyon National Park, National Park Service officials confirmed Friday.
According to a park service news release, 68-year-old Mary Kelley of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, was pulled from the Colorado River near Hance Rapid.
Kelley was on the ninth day of a multi-day private boating trip when members of her group pulled her from the water and found her unresponsive just after 11 a.m. local time, The Arizona Republic reported.
Efforts by both her fellow travelers and park rangers to resuscitate Kelley failed, the newspaper reported.
It remained unclear Sunday if Kelley was wearing a life vest when the incident occurred, NBC News reported, noting that an official cause of death has not yet been determined.
According to the park service, Hance Rapid is considered to be highly technical and features powerful whitewater rapids, The Arizona Republic reported.
