JACKSON COUNTY, Mo. — A family is mourning the loss of a 7-year-old and the child’s 6-year-old sibling.
Missouri Highway Patrol said the 7-year-old took his grandmother’s car keys and the two boys took off Friday afternoon.
At first, they were riding around their own property but eventually made it out to a road in Jackson County, KCTV reported.
Police said the 7-year-old was behind the wheel and was speeding when the child lost control of the car. The vehicle went airborne and hit a guardrail before hitting the ground and launching into the air a second time.
Eventually, the car came to a stop when it hit a tree, but the car caught fire, NBC News reported.
Officials said neither child had a seat belt on, KCTV reported.
Both children were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, NBC News reported.
