Georgia man convicted of shooting victim over game of UNO at party

A jury has convicted a Georgia man in a shooting that authorities said was prompted by a game of UNO, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Taylor Stuart Grant, 34, of Cobb County, was found guilty on April 28 of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.

Grant shot the victim during a party at his cousin’s home in Marietta on Dec. 13, 2020, WSB-TV reported. According to the district attorney’s office, Grant shot the 37-year-old victim, who was visiting from California, after the two began arguing after the group played a game of UNO, according to the television station.

Prosecutors said Grant shot the victim in the biceps and threatened to fatally shoot him, according to WSB.

“Intoxication seemed to be the catalyst for the events of Dec. 13,” Assistant District Attorney Nemonie Nooks said. “However, it was no excuse for the excessive force that Grant used.”

The victim initially told authorities that he had been wounded during a drive-by shooting and did not know who fired the weapon, the Miami Herald reported.

However, he changed his mind after undergoing several surgeries in California, according to the newspaper.

According to prosecutors, the victim testified during Grant’s trial that he lied about the shooting “because he did not want to get anyone in trouble.”

Grant was arrested on April 2, 2021, at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, WSB reported. He will be sentenced at a later date.
