Garland County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that a fisherman in the area alerted them last month about a possible “sunken vehicle on their fishing graph,” submerged at the bottom of Lake Hamilton.

Days later on Feb. 28, the sheriff’s office’s marine patrol and the Arkansas Game and Fish used sonar technology to confirm that a car was sitting at the bottom of the lake.

Divers and authorities returned to the area on March 3 and found skeletal remains inside the car, according to KARK. The following day, the car was removed from the water.

The car, a 2003 grey Ford Escape, had a vehicle identification number associated with a missing person’s report filed with the Hot Springs Police Department in Feb. 2008, KARK reported.

The sheriff’s office said they are working with the Hot Springs Police Department on the investigation, adding that remains were sent off to the State of Arkansas Crime Lab for identification.
