15 people hurt in shooting near Chicago funeral home, police say

At least 15 people were hurt Tuesday in a shooting near a funeral home in Chicago, police confirmed.

Here are the latest updates:

Update 6:12 a.m. EDT July 22: Chicago police said early Wednesday that 15 people were hurt in the shooting in the city’s Auburn Gresham neighborhood, WBBM-TV is reporting. Authorities previously had said at least 14 people were hurt.

According to WBBM, the victims, who range in age from 21 to 65, include 10 women and five men. Six of the injured remain in serious condition, police said.

Update 11:38 p.m. EDT July 21: Six of the 14 people injured were women. Two of them are 27, and at least one of them was shot in the chest, police said. A 25-year-old woman was shot in the buttocks and a 38-year-old woman was also wounded, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Other victims include a 40-year-old man shot in the chest, arm and forearm. Two men, ages 32 and 22, respectively, were shot in the hand, the newspaper reported.

Update 10:16 p.m. July 21: At least six of the people who were wounded were women who sustained upper-body gunshot wounds, WGN-TV reported. No juveniles were shot, police said.

The funeral was being held for a 31-year-old man who was fatally shot last week, according to WGN-TV.

Update 9:57 p.m. EDT July 21: According to First Deputy Supt. Eric Carter, a black car was driving westbound on 79th Street when occupants inside began firing at the funeral, WLS reported. People at the funeral returned gunfire, the television station reported. The car turned north on Carpenter Street and continued to fire until it crashed about midway down the block, Carter said.

Update 9:48 p.m. EDT July 21: Chicago police officials said that at least 14 people were shot Tuesday near the Rhodes Funeral Home in the Auburn Gresham section on Chicago’s South Side. Victims were transported to five different hospitals.

Authorities said one person was in custody, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Update 9:19 p.m. EDT July 21: Officials said at least nine people were taken by ambulances from the scene, WBBM reported. Fire officials said two additional victims were found several blocks from Rhodes Funeral Home and were in the process of self-transporting, the television station reported.

Arnita Geder and Kenneth Hughes told the Chicago Sun-Times they were home watching televisions when they heard gunshots.

“We went out in the street and all we saw was bodies just laying everywhere,” Geder told the newspaper. “They were shot up everywhere.

“We thought it was a war out here. It’s ridiculous all the shooting that’s going on out here, it really has to stop.”

Update 8:48 p.m. EDT July 21: Officials with the Chicago Fire Department said 11 people were taken to area hospitals for treatment, WLS reported. Fire officials did not indicate the ages and genders of the victims, the television station reported. The victims were attending a funeral at the Rhodes Funeral Home, WGN-TV reported.

Update 8:36 p.m. EDT July 21: Officials said at least nine people were shot in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood of Chicago and were transported by ambulances, according to WBBM. The shooting occurred around 7:30 p.m., WLS reported.

Most of the victims taken to the hospital were in serious to critical condition, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford told the Chicago Tribune.

Original report: The number of victims was not immediately known because the victims drove to hospitals or fled, WBBM reported.

Police have not released any further details about the shooting, including the circumstances surrounding the shooting, any details about injuries, WLS reported.

Authorities have also not said how many shooters were involved or if anyone is in custody, according to the television station.
