SAN ANTONIO — A 16-year-old boy was in critical condition Thursday after being shot while a group of teenagers was playing with a gun, authorities said.
The youth was shot in the torso and was taken to an area hospital for surgery, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.
Initially, deputies were told the teen shot himself, Sheriff Javier Salazar told KSAT. Authorities changed their minds after conducting several interviews, the television station reported.

“It was a group of juveniles that may have been playing with a gun,” Salazar said at a news conference. “At some point, someone in the room may have shot him in the upper body.”
Salazar said the teen’s injuries are “pretty grave,” the San Antonio Express-News reported.
“It’s a very real possibility he may not survive, albeit, we hope that he does,” Salazar told reporters.
Salazar said his office has detained the juvenile believed to have fired the shot, KENS reported. The sheriff added there were adults inside the home where the shooting occurred.
