Some AMC theaters reopening in August with 15-cent tickets

AMC Theatres, the nation's largest movie theater chain, will reopen this month with throwback ticket prices of 15 cents.

AMC will open 100 theaters, about one-sixth of its U.S. locations, Aug. 20 with the one-day special ticket pricing promotion "Movies in 2020 at 1920 Prices."

“We are thrilled to once again open our doors to American moviegoers who are looking for an opportunity to get out of their houses and apartments and escape into the magic of the movies,” Adam Aron, president of AMC Theatres, told Market Watch.

The U.S. reopening was delayed several times because of a rise in coronavirus cases over the summer. Theaters in the U.S. have been closed since mid-March. The company has reopened many of its international theater locations.

In the U.S., AMC plans a phased reopening, with about two thirds of its locations open in time for the release of blockbusters "New Mutants," coming out Aug. 28, and "Tenet" on Sept. 3. The remaining locations will open based on state and local orders. Some states, including New York and California, have not allowed movie theaters to reopen.

Regal Cinemas, the nation’s second largest chain, plans to reopen some locations Aug. 21.

Cinemark, the third largest theater chain with locations in more than 25 states including Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania, started a phased reopening of its theaters earlier in the summer.

The movie chains have said they will operate at reduced capacity and implement social distancing as well as increase theater cleaning.
