University Christian crowns homecoming queen and king

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — University Christian played its homecoming game against Duval Charter in the Subway Restaurants Friday Night Blitz Game of the Week.

A heavy shower during game warmups turned the field into a mud pit.

Eight senior girls and eight senior boys were dressed in their Sunday best for the halftime homecoming event.

Representatives from ninth, 10th and 11th grades walked down the muddy field before the main event.

The homecoming party came down the field in pairs. Some wore heels that sank into the field, while others opted for flats or sandals.

The voice boomed over the loudspeaker announcing Dazirae Simmons and Leaston Law as homecoming queen and king.

Simmons, 17, says she was surprised to win. “I doubted myself. I was shocked and happy,” she said.

She chose to enter the race for the crown to get connected with her senior class.

“I’ve been at UC for a while now and I just thought it would be fun to do something with my classmates in a smaller setting,” Simmons said.

Law, on the other hand, says he didn’t choose to run at all. He says someone put his name on the list and tons of people voted for him.

“I really don’t have bad relationships with anybody, I’m friends with everybody, I’m kind to everybody,” Law said.

Law, 18, said his character is what makes him so popular.

“I talk to pretty much anybody. If I see somebody in a slump, I try to take them out. It’s just the Christian character I have,” he said.

Simmons said she is also known around University Christian for being positive.

“Maintain the same reputation that I have and get better now that I’ll be in the spotlight a little more,” Simmons said. “I’ll remain true to who I am.”

Simmons loves that she gets to represent her school.

“We’re a family. When I come to school I don’t really feel like I’m at school, I feel like I’m with a bunch of family,” Simmons said.

Law said football players have a history of winning the homecoming king title.

“I’ve seen people ahead of me and before me that have done it. It’s kind of big to carry on the tradition,” Law said.

Law said winning the title halfway through the game was added pressure.

“I need to be a leader on the field,” he said.

UC was losing the game to Duval Charter 7-6. Law was nervous.

“It’s a pretty big game. We knew it was going to be tough.  You’re supposed to win a homecoming, so hopefully we can.”

University Christian won their homecoming game 20-7.
