JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — It's a scene that's hard to forget -- a mangled Crown Victoria, pieces of glass and debris everywhere.
We first told you about the crash on Old Middleburg Road Wednesday. Officials have now identified the victim as 15-year-old Tyriq Grant.
"I was here when the detective came over and gave her the news. It was real bad and I kind of looked it up and saw that it happened this morning put two and two together from what the detective told her," neighbor Gregory Johnson said.
Neighbors say Tyriq's mom dropped him off at Ed White High School that fatal day, but he had other plans. He hopped in the car with two friends and left campus. They got into a fender-bender with a car at Lennox Avenue and Lane Avenue, then took off. While fleeing at a high speed, they lost control and crashed, killing Tyriq.
Johnson tells us Tyriq was nice and was often seen going to a nearby park.
"I saw him here and there. Met him a couple of times. Typical teenager," he said.
Ed White's principal announced the death Friday morning. They had grief counselors, a moment of silence and encouraged the students to make good choices.
The two boys still in the hospital are also students at Ed White. They played football for a Pop Warner team, Tyriq played basketball. According to JSO, Tyriq was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
